Each puzzle features a new theme connecting many of the answers — you might be solving a puzzle about Classic Films, Olympic Sports, or World Capitals, and the theme provides useful context for tricky clues. The main puzzle typically contains 60–70 clues, while the daily mini crossword is a shorter warm-up with around 10–15 clues. Both are fully covered here.

How to Play Daily Themed Crossword
The Daily Themed Crossword is a classic American-style crossword with a twist: every puzzle has a daily theme that connects many of the fill answers. Understanding the theme is often the fastest way to unlock the grid.
When you open the app, you see the grid for today with ACROSS and DOWN clue lists. Tap a square to select it and the clue bar shows the current clue. Type your answer using the on-screen keyboard. Correct letters turn a confirmed colour; incorrect ones flag as wrong immediately if hints are enabled.
The theme usually reveals itself in the three or four longest answers — they are directly connected to the day's topic. For instance, a Back to School theme might have PENCILCASE, HOMEWORK, and CLASSROOM hidden in the grid. Once you spot the theme, you can often infer the remaining long answers from the letter pattern alone, without needing all the crossing letters.
Shorter fill clues are typically wordplay, abbreviations, or pop-culture references. A clue ending in (Abbr.) always takes an abbreviated answer, and a clue phrased in the past tense requires a past-tense answer. The mini crossword is perfect for a quick daily warm-up and usually takes under two minutes once you are familiar with the format.
Tips for Hard Daily Themed Crossword Clues
After solving every puzzle since October 2017, Naomi Forster has developed a set of strategies that work even on the trickiest themed grids:
The theme is your best shortcut. PlaySimple often puts a cultural hook in the puzzle title. If you know today's theme is Space Exploration, every long answer is likely an astronaut, planet, mission, or spacecraft. Deduce the long answers from theme logic first, then solve the crossing short clues.
Crossword-ese vocabulary is worth memorising. Frequent short answers include ALOE, ARIA, ETNA, ERIE, ORE, ERA, ALE, OLE, ELIA. Seeing a three-letter clue referencing a lake is almost certainly ERIE. Opera solo = ARIA. These shorthand answers appear in almost every puzzle.
Watch for directional clues. ___ Avenue is usually PARK or FIFTH. Street ___ might be SMART, CRED, or CAR depending on letter count. Learning these patterns cuts solving time significantly.
Check crossing letters before guessing. Never commit to a speculative answer without checking at least two crossings. A wrong long answer can cascade into five or six wrong short answers and make the grid unsolvable. Use the search tool below to look up any clue from the 142,688-pair archive instantly.
How We Verify Every Daily Themed Crossword Answer
Naomi Forster solves every Daily Themed Crossword puzzle on the day of release — both the main puzzle and the mini — before the answers are published on this site. Verification is done directly in the PlaySimple Games app on iOS, confirming each answer letter by letter against the official grid.
The archive data going back to October 2017 has been cross-referenced against puzzle scans to confirm historical accuracy. Any answer that has been updated or corrected in the game since its original release is flagged and corrected in the database. If you find a discrepancy, the Contact page lets you report it directly to Naomi.
